Request for the guarantee of human rights for persons with disabilities in response to COVID-19

With the outbreak of COVID-19 is getting worse, the shortage of ventilators and medical staff is becoming more serious, and the “selection of lives” that has begun to occur in other countries, DPI-Japan has sent a joint statement with other 6 organizations to the Prime Minister: “Request for the guarantee of human rights for persons with disabilities in response to COVID-19”. Americans with Disabilities Act tour 2017

From July 22nd to 29th 2017, the Japan Council of Independent Living organized a tour to directly experience the disability movement in the U.S. and meet front runners who have been working for the rights of persons with disabilities from all over the world. 89 people, including 40 youth members (under 40 years-old), joined the tour, called “American with Disability Act tour (ADA tour)”from Japan. Besides our participation, leaders with disabilities from over 20 countries got together in Washington D.C., U.S.A. Report on DPI’s project to develop the next generation of leaders with disabilities

Keiichiro Tamaru, DPI-Japan   Recognizing the importance to foster leaders among young people with disabilities, we here at DPI-Japan last year began the Next generation of leaders with disabilities –  Development and Empowerment Project (Empowerment School), with the support of The Kirin Foundation.   We extended invitations mainly to member organizations, resulting in a large number of applicants from all over Japan and a total of twenty-one participants overall. The majority of these members had physical disabilities, but we also had those with incurable illnesses and intellectual disabilities join us (with three being from DPI secretariats).   In the early stages, the members met, discussed, and learned about various topics…
